Project 2 Week 6

Strategy Statement:

I would first depict how the Church of Light looked when it was perfectly fine and new, how the surroundings bring peace and how light gives the audience a warm feeling. Then a series of natural disasters will be the cause of the extinction of humanity, and since I am doing the Church of Light, which is located in Japan the natural disasters would be a disastrous earthquake, followed by a huge typhoon that almost swept everything away.

100 years after the disaster and the extinction of humans, without any maintenance on the Church of Light, the exterior and interior walls are cracked, some parts will have fallen and dirt has covered the whole wall, the cross will remain intact but all the glass and windows are broken off. In the interior most of the chairs are being destroyed by the concrete ceiling that fell but some chairs are still standing but heavily molded.  

Reflection:

This week we went through decaying textures and decaying materials and how to give off an impression that the building is 100 years old without maintenance. We also went through the roles in designing games and gaming environments. Out of the lists of roles I think I would like to be a game artist or game designer because they are the ones that control the whole experience of a game; how the environment, objects, and interactions effect differently to different players.

This was chosen because of the dark colour tones and the dark atmosphere, which conveys the lost of hope and evokes a desperate and exciting feeling.

This was chosen because of the scenes of the destruction of buildings, which I could use as a reference on how a building is destroyed.



The Maze Runner
This was chosen because the theme of despair and it also evokes a really deep and intense atmosphere.



X-Men: Days of Future Past
This was chosen because the scenes that was shown was effectively depicted with the music and sound.



Guardians of the Galaxy
This was chosen because of the screen direction and the atmosphere gives of a exciting sensation.

Reflection:
This week we went through how may disaster destroy our models and decide what disasters will lead to the destruction of humanity, also we went through movie trailers and analyzed how they may relate to our project.

Statement:

The Church of Light is located in Japan, which the area is prone to earthquakes and typhoons, my direction for the destruction and the decay of my model is that the church would be destroyed by a series of natural disaster, first an earthquake then a typhoon; destroying all the windows and leaving holes and broken concrete around the building.

Reflection:

This week we went through the destruction of buildings and demolition of buildings, and in terms of concrete and the steel rods, the steel rods are most likely to rust and bend, which will poke through the concrete causing the concrete the crack.

This week we went to the library to search for construction details that relates to our chosen building, during the search I found a chapel which is very similar to the Church of Light, and with it I found details of the window framing, the windows, and the timber floorings.

Research Materials:

Concrete: 

Concrete is a material composed mainly of water, aggregate, and cement. Additives and reinforcements are added in the mixture to achieve the desired physical properties. When these ingredients are mixed together, they form a fluid mass that is easily molded into shape. The expected lifetime of concrete usually lasts for 100 years. Concrete can be damaged by many processes, such as the expansion of corrosion products of the steel reinforcement bars, freezing of trapped water, fire or radiant heat, aggregate expansion, sea water effects, bacterial corrosion, leaching, erosion by fast-flowing water, physical damage and chemical damage.

Glass:

Glass is traditionally formed by rapid quenching and under-cooling of a liquid, forming a super-cooled liquid which solidifies at its glass transition temperature. The expected lifetime of glass varies on the types of glass, the expected range is between 27-34 years. Since glass are fragile objects it could be broken by asserting a large force towards the glass with any hard objects.

Steel:

Steel is an alloy composed of iron and carbon. Steel is made from smelting iron ore to become ingots, then the ingots are heated in a soaking pit and hot rolled into slabs, blooms, or billets. Slabs are hot or cold rolled into sheet metal or plates. Billets are hot or cold rolled into bars, rods, and wire. Blooms are hot or cold rolled into structural steel, such as I-beams and rails. The typical life expectancy of steel is usually around 83 years. Steel can be damaged by long-term exposure of air molecules, long-term exposure to wet elements, sea water effects, bacterial corrosion, physical and chemical damage.

Reflection:

This week we went through some of project one submission and we also went through some properties of materials e.g. concrete and the production process of these materials. Since I chose Church of Light and it is mainly composed of reinforced concrete I found this week's lecture really useful.

Brazilian Museum of Sculpture

The Brazilian Museum of Sculpture is built in 1968 designed by the Architect Paulo Mendes da Rocha, which is located in Sao Paulo, Brazil. The museum and the landscape is treated as a whole and it uses large concrete slabs to create partly underground internal spaces and also to form an exterior plaza with water pools and an esplanade.


21st Century of Contemporary Art

The 21st Century of Contemporary Art is built in 2004 designed by the Architects Kazuyo Sejima and Ryue Nishizawa of the architect office SANAA, located in Kanazawa, Ishikawa, Japan. The shape aims to keep the appearance of the building low, allowing access from multiple points of entry. The transparency of the building conveys that the museum is relatively small. 


Church of Light

The Church of Light is the main chapel of the Ibaraki Kasugaoka Church, a member church of the United Church of Christ in Japan. The building is built in 1989 in the city of Ibaraki, Osaka, Japan, by the Architect Tadao Ando.

Reflection:

This week Russell explained and introduced project 2 to the whole lecture. He gave us 6 different models and we are required to choose one of the 6 models to model the decay of the building; He also showed us some past examples of how buildings are destroyed/decayed.

Reflection:

In this weeks lecture we learnt about movement. In the lecture we saw a number of movie trailers from the early 1950's to present, from looking at all of these movie trailers, it gave me an idea of transitioning between phrases and the scene, also the phrases should be kept short as possible so the audience would not be bombarded with words while enjoying the trailer.

Week 5

Strategy:

Since the last number of my Student ID is 0, I am going to use the second last number of my Student ID which is a 4 to work on bringing up my subliminal message.

I am planning on working with 5 range of scales to hide and reveal my subliminal message. On the biggest scale the Island itself is an 'U' shaped Island, which satisfies the last letter of my last name, and since an 'U' shaped Island is common it works well with bringing up a subliminal message as the audience would not realize there is a hidden meaning behind the shape of the Island. Also there are four small Islands surrounding the main Island to convey the subliminal message of '4'.

On the Second Biggest Scale I used textures to reveal and conceal the message of '4' and 'U', theses textures are hidden within the other textures in a slightly darker colour, so it does not really stand out to the audience at the first sight, but as they look more carefully into the textures there are able to see the concealing message. On the medium scale I used tree and house entities to reveal and conceal the message, by grouping them into 4's and creating an 'U' shaped with the houses. On the second smallest scale I used rock entities and group them into 4's. In the Smallest scale I use road paths to generate 'U' turns and 4 way intersection to reveal and conceal the message of '4' and 'U'.

Reflection:

This weeks lecture is about the Subliminal. From this lecture I was able to gain a lot of ideas on how to conceal and reveal the messages, and I decided that I would use the Island as a whole, and the objects within the Island, to try give off a subtle message for the audience.

Reflection:

This weeks lecture was about the Sublime. From this lecture I was able to get inspiration from most of the images as they all give off an similar trait of grey and dullness, so I decided that I will try to make my Island give off an impression of mysterious, loneliness and dull.

Reflection:

This weeks lecture is about the picturesque, the picturesque utilizes the foreground, middle-ground and the background to convey an interesting idea towards the audience. For my Island I would like to utilize all these spaces to give off an impression of peacefulness and silence towards the audience.
